3/1/10 – New location progress. The mats are all down, we now have the largest BJJ/MMA mat space in the state (except for the military). There is still lots of work to do (more wall mats, install the cage, hang the bags), we expect this to take another 6 weeks.

2/7/10-Schedule for upcoming week.
Both the Anchorage and Valley locations will be closed on Wed (2/10) because the team will be at the AFC supporting our fighters.
The Anchorage location will be closed Saturday (2/13) and Sunday (2/14) to move the school. Monday’s class (2/15) will start on time at the new location:
113 West Northern Lights (in the mall with KFC and World’s gym)
The place still needs a lot of work so bare with us until it’s finished.
The Valley location will have Saturday class like normal.

1/27/10- Valley training in full swing. Kevin Barber was in the valley teaching at the new location along with some of the top fighters in the state; Nate Hannah, Tim Hendricks, Ben Meabs, Seth Skogstad, and Rob Yundt. We are accepting both novice and veterans to our program. There is no other place in the valley that provides this level of experience and instruction.
1/27/10 – New ABJJ Training Facility!
We are moving to a new training facility. Our new location is 4700 square feet and will include a full size cage, heavy bag stations, and over 2000 square feet of BJJ mat. The industry leader in cages, ThrowDown, is putting together the cage and bag plan for us and we are supposed to be featured on their web site with other top notch facilities.
Our new location will be the largest private facility in Alaska dedicated to BJJ/MMA training. We are very excited to be bringing additional training resources to our members and the community.
The new location is at 113 W. Northern Lights (the same building as World Gym) and it’s the space formerly operated by a Taekwondo place. This location is directly off of C street which will cut down the travel time for our military students.
We expect to move our current mats over in the next few weeks with the rest of equipment being put into place in the next 8-10 weeks. We will let students know the exact date at least a week before the move.
1/19/10- We had a great start to our first class in the Mat-Su Valley with more than 20 people in attendance. On the BJJ side we had Brown, Purple, and Blue belts on hand working technique with the students. On the MMA side we had several very experienced fighters on hand to show some practical moves for the cage. This is a great opportunity for people living in the Valley to get to work with an experienced team and we look forward to developing this program.

12/23/09 – The New Intro to MMA class is in full swing. Remember this is for all skill levels. In attendance tonight was 7 MMA vets (Kevin B, Doug E, Ken P, Nate H, Tim H, Chris B, Ryan A), 4 women, several advanced BJJ students, and 6 students that signed up at ABJJ a few weeks ago. Many people are taking advantage of the extra cardio time.

12/8/09 – Program Changes.
As ABJJ continues to grow we have seen the Monday night BJJ class consistently pack nearly 40 people on the mat. We are offering some new classes so people have more choices of when to train.
New Classes:
Introduction to BJJ. The class is designed for those with no grappling experience to make the transition into the novice (white belt) class easier. The focus will be on learning the drills we use in all classes and basic strategy from each position. Students attending this class should stay for the Novice class which starts right after it.
Intro to MMA/Wrestling/Cardio. This new class will allow people with no prior experience in MMA to participate. Up until now ABJJ only had an advanced MMA program. The MMA portion of the class will be drilling and not sparing. The cardio portion of the class will be higher intensity than the basic warm up in the BJJ class. This a great class for anyone looking to get started in MMA or take their cardio to the next level.
Open Mat. The school will have some time set aside where members can come practices their BJJ outside of formal class. No sparring (striking) during this class, free rolling (grappling) is fine.
New Class Times:
Tuesday
The formal women’s class is cancelled. People that used to attend that class should come to the first part of the Intro to MMA/Wrestling/Cardio which will have a similar format.
5:30-6:00pm Introduction to BJJ
6:00-7:30pm BJJ-Novice. These will be the same techniques covered in the Monday 6-8pm class.
7:30-9:00pm Intro to MMA/Wrestling/Cardio
Saturday
Noon-1:30pm Open Mat
4:00-5:30pm Intro to MMA/Wrestling/Cardio

Professor Tinguinha has just started a comprehensive web site full of techniques, competition videos, and other great training tips. We recommend all ABJJ members think about subscribing to this. For military or North Slope workers with schedules that prevent them from training as much as they would like this is a must have.

5/21/09 – Anyone looking to get some extra training can see Assistant Instructor Ryder for private lessons. Cost is $30 per half-hour, or $250 for 10 classes.
5/19/09 – Schedule Change (effective 5/27)
To accommodate increased class sizes we are splitting the Wednesday BJJ class into two classes as follows:
-The Women’s 5:30-6:30 cardio is being cancelled.
-6:00pm-7:30pm, Novice class
-7:30-9:00pm, Advanced class
The novice class is going to focus on core BJJ techniques and building cardio to get the students up to speed with the group. Upper belts can attend if it works better with their schedule.
The advanced class will follow a similar format to Sunday’s advanced class. The class is designed for blue belts and up but three and four stripe white belts can attend if they come to the novice class first (i.e. you can’t skip training the basics and be able to pull off more difficult techniques).

9/8/07 – New Women’s Cardio MMA class open to the public. For several months Kevin and Ryder have been running a women’s cardio MMA class. The class consists of many of the same conditioning exercises used in the regular MMA class, circuit training, and working the mitts (but no sparring or contact). The class is designed for those women looking for a high intensity workout, space is limited. See the schedule for class times.
